HOW CARING FOR MY MOM'S SKIN DURING ALZHEIMER'S TAUGHT ME THE POWER OF NATURAL INGREDIENTS, MEMORY, AND LOVE...

It was 2018 when caring for my beloved mother became a full-time responsibility due to the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Before her diagnosis advanced, my mom took great pride in caring for her skin—nurturing it inside and out through good nutrition and thoughtful skincare.
As her memory began to fade, I felt an urgent passion to preserve something familiar and comforting: her skin health. I wanted her to still feel good in her own skin, even as so much around her was changing. That’s when my journey began—researching the most natural, effective ways to care for her skin.
Although I studied nutrition science in undergrad, the knowledge truly came alive for me during this time.
Did you know the aging process significantly affects the skin?
As we age, the skin undergoes structural and functional changes. One of the most noticeable is the thinning of the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, which makes it more prone to bruising, injuries, and infections. The dermis, responsible for strength and elasticity, loses collagen and elastin fibers—leading to wrinkles, sagging, and dryness. Meanwhile, sebaceous glands become less active, reducing the skin's natural oil production and resulting in drier, more irritable skin. The skin’s ability to retain moisture also declines, making hydration more essential than ever.
Fueled by Passion
Led by my new found passion, I dove deep into research, searching for the best natural combinations to support the skin—complementing her healthy diet with external care. Shea butter quickly became a go-to ingredient. I started blending it with essential oils, natural preservatives, and antioxidant-rich cold-pressed vitamin E. I added tea tree oil for its anti-fungal properties, and eventually hyaluronic acid to help lock in moisture even more effectively.
My kitchen became a mini-lab, and I poured my heart into creating something special—something my mom would love. I carefully selected essential oil blends that lifted her mood and reminded her of scents she used to enjoy. Applying rich, emollient moisturizers after her bath became a ritual—one that nourished her body and, in some small way, her spirit.
I love my mom deeply, and I wanted her to continue loving her skin, even as her mind changed with age.
Aging Is Beautiful
Aging is beautiful. Illnesses like Alzheimer’s may be beyond our control—for now—but how we care for ourselves and our loved ones is not. Loving your skin is a powerful act of self-love. And loving the skin of an aging parent? That’s an act of deep, enduring love.
Let’s honor our elders not just by caring for them—but by helping them feel good in the skin they’re in - and by taking care of ourselves.
